The 55th Annual WATER 2026 Conference Was Successfully Held in Ivanjica

Continuing its long-standing tradition, the Serbian Water Pollution Control Society (SWPCS) organized the 55th annual conference, entitled WATER 2026  in Ivanjica from May 25 to 27. The conference was dedicated to current issues related to the protection of water resources from pollution, with the aim of ensuring their efficient and sustainable use. The event was supported by the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia and the Engineering Chamber of Serbia.

The Conference Proceedings of WATER 2026 contain a total of 40 papers that were reviewed and accepted by the Scientific Committee for presentation at the conference and publication in the proceedings.

Most of the contributing authors are from Serbia, while papers from researchers from the region and other countries worldwide are also represented. The papers were organized into the following thematic areas:

  • Water management, environmental, and organizational aspects of water use and protection
  • Water quality and processes in natural waters
  • Wastewater collection and treatment

The papers presented at the conference reflect the current state of research and professional activities in the fields of water use and water pollution control in Serbia and the wider region. Particularly noteworthy topics included challenges related to achieving emission limit values for industrial wastewater discharges, institutional and organizational aspects of protection against the harmful effects of water, water pollution originating from municipal solid waste landfills, the application of nature-based solutions in water protection, current issues concerning water quality in Serbia and the region, as well as modern and innovative methods for monitoring water quality and treating wastewater.

A special conference session dedicated to the presentation of ongoing research, development, and innovation projects attracted considerable interest among participants. A total of five projects funded through the Horizon Europe, Interreg, SAIGE, and the Center for the Promotion of Science programs were presented. Participants had the opportunity to learn about innovative methods for water quality assessment, the application of citizen science in water management and protection, innovative decentralized approaches to industrial wastewater treatment, and international initiatives aimed at establishing a framework for sediment monitoring and management within the Danube River Basin.

The conference was successful and aligned with the SWPCS’s commitment to promoting a multidisciplinary approach to water protection issues, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive understanding and more effective resolution of these challenges.
